Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators in Minneapolis, MN

Proper ventilation in homes is more difficult than ever. Modern homes are designed for energy efficiency so they’ll keep out heat during hot weather and keep heat trapped indoors in cold weather. This is good news for maintaining comfort and avoiding wasting power using the air conditioner and the heater. It’s bad news for indoor air quality, however, because the air trapped indoors without fresh air to replace it will become stale, stuffy, and full of numerous pollutants.

How can you fix this problem in your house without opening up windows and doors to the extreme weather outside? Residential Heating and Air Conditioning has a solution: installing an energy or heat recovery ventilator. You can trust our more than 25 years of service and our A+ rating with the BBB. We’ll help improve your indoor air quality in Minneapolis, MN.

How ERV and HRV Systems Work

Energy recovery ventilators and heat recovery ventilators (ERV and HRV) are similar devices that use the air inside a building to pre–heat fresh air brought into the ventilation system. The ERV/HRV draws two currents through it: fresh air brought in through an outdoor vent, and stale air from indoors. The two currents move through the unit and by a process of counter flow heat exchange heat moves from one to the other. This pre–cools or pre–heats the fresh air, which then enters the building, while the stale and pollutant–filled air is exhausted outdoors.

The process works for both winter and summer weather. In winter, the outgoing indoor air loses heat to the incoming fresh air. The process switches in summer. This allows the unit to "recover" the energy used to originally heat and cool the air inside the building and apply it to the fresh air.

The Advantages of Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators

An ERV system or ERV system improves indoor air quality without placing too much extra strain on the air conditioner or heater. Stuffy air is sent outside, fresh air drawn inside, all without the excessive loss of energy that would occur if windows and doors were thrown open. A heat or energy recover ventilator can recovery about 80% of the energy that would otherwise be lost to fresh air circulation.

In addition, ERV systems exchange moisture during counter flow heat exchange, which helps to balance indoor humidity. HRVs don’t have any humidity control, but they are also more effective during extreme cold temperatures.
