Is It Really an AC Breakdown? Troubleshooting Tips

There’s nothing more stressful than coming home on a hot day only to find your air conditioner isn’t working. Before you panic and assume you’re in for an expensive repair, it’s worth taking a few minutes for AC troubleshooting in St. Paul, MN. Sometimes what looks like a breakdown is actually an easy fix you can handle yourself — and if it’s not, our professional HVAC team is here to help get you cool and comfortable again in no time.

Check the Circuit Breaker

One of the most common reasons for a “dead” AC is a tripped circuit breaker. Your air conditioner uses a lot of power, and if there’s a brief surge or overload, the breaker may shut off power to protect your home’s electrical system.

Locate your electrical panel and find the breaker labeled for your AC or HVAC system. If it’s in the “off” position or sitting in the middle, switch it fully off and then back on again. If the breaker trips again right away, leave it off — this could indicate an underlying electrical issue that needs a professional’s attention.

Replace or Clean the Air Filter

Another culprit behind poor cooling performance or complete system shutdown is a dirty air filter. Over time, filters collect dust, pet hair, and other debris, restricting airflow. This can cause your system to overheat or shut down to prevent damage.

Check your filter — it’s usually located behind a return vent or inside the indoor unit. If it’s clogged or looks gray and dusty, replace it with a fresh one. For reusable filters, clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, let it dry completely, and reinstall it. As a rule of thumb, check your filter every month during peak cooling season.

Inspect the Thermostat

Sometimes the problem isn’t with the AC at all, but with the thermostat settings. Make sure your thermostat is switched to “cool” mode, the fan is set to “auto,” and the temperature is set several degrees lower than the current indoor temperature.

Many modern thermostats also have energy-saving or “away” settings that can override your normal schedule. Double-check that no vacation or “eco” mode has been accidentally activated. If your thermostat uses batteries, try replacing them if the screen is blank or unresponsive.

Still Not Working? Time to Call the Pros

If you’ve checked the breaker, changed the filter, and confirmed your thermostat settings — and your AC still won’t cool properly — it’s time to bring in a licensed HVAC technician. While it might be tempting to poke around inside the unit yourself, DIY AC repairs are never a good idea. Today’s systems are complex and require specialized tools and training to diagnose and fix safely. Attempting a repair yourself could void your warranty, cause further damage, or even create electrical and refrigerant hazards.

Our experienced team is trained to handle all makes and models, and we’ll get to the root of the problem quickly and safely. We’ll have your home comfortable again and give you peace of mind that the job is done right.
